I went into SecondLife this morning to catch the tail end of “Coffee with Crayon” put on by C.C.Chapman’s new company. It happens on 6am PT (9am ET) each Thursday morning. That’s a bit early on the West Coast so I usually don’t make it and in fact this time most of the crowd had dissipated by the time that I got in. But I chatted with a few people off and on while I read email, etc. I was having a good conversation with a fellow named Don from Australia about what I do in the real world.
(I am the EVP of Engineering and Operations for an internet community agency. Our clients include AOL, eBay, HBO, A&E, History Channel, Biography Channel, QVC, MTV, TV Guide, BBC, Campbell’s Soup, Mini Cooper, BEA, Intuit, etc. We provide discussion boards, social networks, online events and moderation services.)
After chatting we exchanged company names and emails because he was interested in hearing more about the company and what I have been doing. As we were saying goodbye I realized that since I was only half paying attention to SecondLife I had not been looking at Don’s avatar so I panned around to see him so that I would recognize him if I saw him again. He was wearing a superman costume. Only in SecondLife do I find my self having business conversations with the man of steel.

A great parody site about SecondLife called getafirstlife.com:
Got First Life Questions?
We’ve Got Answers
Are five senses enough?
What’s this body thing, and what do I do with the dangly bits?
Why can’t I build a dirigible with my mind?
Penguins, spoons and you — what’s life like among the flightless?

I what can be seen as bad news for Linden Labs efforts to get brands involved in Second Life comes this story:
As virtual world of Second Life grows in size, drawing brands into it, so has it spawned virtual terrorists – or freedom fighters, depending on one’s view. Security researcher and e-commerce consultant Wayne Porter of ReveNews held an exclusive interview with a member of the Second Life Liberation Army (SLLA).
The SLLA, consisting of about a dozen veteran members, is believed to be the first national liberation movement of its kind seeking political rights for virtual characters, known as avatars. The group really pulled into action when Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, allowed the creation of unverified accounts.

I had a chance to attend the concert put on my Uncle Seth in Second Life yesterday. I had not heard the band much before this. They have a wonderful mellow sound. I am actually surprised how well a virtual concert like this works. The venue for the event was the coffee house on podcast island which provided a very clear stream for the audio. The band interacted with the guests in a very informal coffee house atmosphere. They were clearly watching what was going on in the room as they played.
