Larry Norman - 1947-2008

Larry NormanIf you you were not around in the 1960s you may not remember when Jesus Rock formed. Some musicians took their Christian faith and their love of Rock and Roll and combined them. Now of course those of you who know the history of Rock and Roll know that it was influenced by church music originally coming out of black churches, but it was not exactly greeted like a long lost son. Many could not deal with “long haired” types and loud music. This was not their idea of church music.

One of the pioneers in Jesus Rock was Larry Norman who received a lot of criticism for his looks and music. His view question of “Why should the devil have all the good music” probably did not endear him with his critics. But it did endear him with kids like me who’s love of blues licks was greater than our love of Bach.

Larry Norman died this week after decades of health problems. The church service I go to on Sunday has drums and electric guitar (the earlier one has organ but is less attended). So no Larry, the devil does not have to have all the good music. Go with God.

Here are some clips of Larry’s songs.

iAno - a Piano On Your iPhone

Cell Phones, Music, iPhone No Comments »

An application that turns your iPhone into a piano! I have not seen this in real life but when Gabe from God’s Mac showed me this video my first thought was “is this real!”. How very cool. Apparently Gizmodo thinks this is real. They also have a link for PocketGuitar which turns your iPhone into a guitar. It may be time for me to jailbreak my iPhone if cool apps like this are out there. Apple, where is that SDK?

I enjoyed this clever look at Facebook. I particularly enjoyed the look at what we would do if Facebook went away.

Uncle Seth in SecondLife

Music, Second Life 1 Comment »

I had a chance to attend the concert put on my Uncle Seth in Second Life yesterday. I had not heard the band much before this. They have a wonderful mellow sound. I am actually surprised how well a virtual concert like this works. The venue for the event was the coffee house on podcast island which provided a very clear stream for the audio. The band interacted with the guests in a very informal coffee house atmosphere. They were clearly watching what was going on in the room as they played.
