Interviewed by Cali Lewis for "On Location"

I was in Dallas on business last week and I have the good pleasure of getting together with Cali and Neal from GeekBrief.tv. Cali and Neal are getting ready to head out on a year long road trip (August) in an RV called the Big Trip. In addition to adding a new travel show for the Big Trip they have decided to shoot a new video show called “On Location” where they will interview bloggers and podcasters. As long as I was in town they shot the first episode of the show interviewing me about the Amateur Traveler podcast, my day job and whatever else the people in the chat room on ustream were asking about (besides “who’s the dude?”).

I am the Director of Engineering for TripAdvisor.com/Flights. I am also the host of the Amateur Traveler. The Amateur Traveler is an online travel show that focuses primarily on travel destinations and what are the best places to travel to. It includes both a weekly audio podcast, a video podcast, and a blog.

Nice setup and no drops on Ustream, but to be honest, 70 minutes is almost double the time that Oprah gives even one big guest. Hoping they tighten it up with time.

Hi Chris,

Great to find out more about you and how you produce the Amateur Traveler podcast! I subscribe to lots of podcasts and weed them out if I don’t get much out of them, so the reviewers must be right because you’ve kept your show interesting enough to keep me on board :) Thank you for improving the audio quality of your interviews, though! For a while it was really distracting with the different audio levels.

Anyway, I was listening to this interview and heard you mention that you did a lot of traveling in western Canada (yay!) and Glacier National Park, so I looked at the episode map and noticed you haven’t done a show on Glacier. I think you should do that sometime. I’ve heard that it’s a great place that’s a little under-the-radar compared to the major US parks, and since it’s not too far from Vancouver I would be interested to hear if it’s really worth a trip.

I think I’m as addicted to learning about new things and investigating the world of travel as you are. I love that your shows give the flavour of a place, rather than just reviews of hotels and such. I wish your guests could give more info on things the guidebooks didn’t mention, and I’m glad you ask about things that are overrated.

I was wondering… does your wife have a time-consuming hobby that’s as intense as yours? I imagine that she must, or else she just wouldn’t understand the amount of time you put into it!

Thanks for fueling my travel addiction :P

I am glad you are enjoying the show. I know what you mean about audio quality. I just went back and listened to the episode on Liverpool (#71) for me trip and cringed. I did feel better after listening to the latest Frommers podcast which was painful to listen to.

We did talk about Glacier some in the episode on National Parks, but I will keep that idea in mind.

My wife’s time consuming holiday is a second master’s degree (public administration) that she is working on. She has a B.S. in Biomedical engineering and an MBA already… and yes I do like to brag about her. :-)

Funny you should mention Frommer’s – I wrote to them just yesterday to complain about the audio!

No wonder your wife understands, that’s an impressive amount of academics!

I’ll have to listen to the National Parks episode again. At the time I was focused on the Grand Canyon and surrounding parks so I probably dismissed any mention of Glacier. Thanks for the heads-up.
