Getting Hooked on Second Life

I have been hearing a lot about the virtual world called Second Life. I started to write that I had heard about the game Second Life, but even though Second Life has many elements that are similar to massively multiplayer games what it does not have is a clearly defined goal.

I have to admit that my first foray into Second Life was underwhelming. I did not know what to do and I did not know where to go. But one of the listeners to my podcast, Kirk, provided tour guide services the other night and before I knew it I was riding around this new virtual world on a motorcycle and playing a game of tag with watermelon guns. I was also laughing out loud.

Later on I went to Adam Curry’s (the Podfather) castle in the game where I had a nice chat with another podcaster from Portland. I also went to Eric Rice’s Hipcast studio since it was conversations with Eric at the Silicon Valley podcasters meetup that had led me to try Second Life again. Here I was met with poison gas, died and went back “home”. I was able to find a way later to say “hi” and to give him a virtual Amateur Traveler t-shirt I had created.

Still later in the evening I wandered into a webcast from the Podcaster News Tower and found myself in a Skypecast with Todd Cochrane and 4 other people. More laughter ensured.

The next day during a scripting class I met someone I had previously worked with who was also attending the class.

I don’t have a paid account or own land yet but I would have to say, for now at least, I am hooked.
